We The People Opportunity Farm

Testimonials

At We The People Opportunity Farm (WTPOF), the impact of our work is best told through the voices of those we’ve had the honor to support and collaborate with. From returning citizens whose lives have been transformed through our programs, to community partners who have witnessed the ripple effects of our mission, these stories reflect the power of hope, opportunity, and community. Read on to hear firsthand accounts of growth, resilience, and the meaningful change that happens when we invest in people and believe in second chances.

"I started volunteering with WTPOF when I first moved to Michigan for grad school in 2016. I was unsure how I could be useful to this organization since I had no agricultural knowledge to offer, but every weekend that I showed up, Melvin found a way to get everyone involved to get things done. It's great to know that I can come out to the farm on any Helping Hands day to plant seedlings, do some weeding, and meet new people who all are working toward the same mission."

I ran across your organization looking for local, small business owned/run by, and for the benefit, of people of color. In the last 10 years, I've come to understand more about my white, protestant, middle-class privilege. Since I can't give personal attention/time now, I can give monetary support. I was drawn to your organization because of the focus on creating a support system for former inmates. I love gardening and I'm glad it's a vehicle for social, emotional, and nutritional well being of the people in your community. - Deb Hetrick

WTPOF has a transformational impact, both on the individuals they serve and the wider community. Participants are nurtured in ways that help them recognize their innate worth and flourish. What WTPOF offers is unique meaningful work that is irreplaceable.

I learned a lot from them as far as being outside of the farm. We went to Lansing to visit the state capitol. We went to other farms to see how they operate. Any problems I had they helped me out. I was behind on a car payment, and Melvin helped me with half of that. I think it was a good program. I just wish they could get more people.

We got our own style, the only farm in Ypsilanti. The people that work here are the unique part. It's difficult to get a job right out of prison because of the record. But the guy that started it was once in prison so he knows where I’m coming from.

Volunteering with W.T.P.O.F. one Saturday afternoon was an experience I’ll never forget. Getting my hands in the soil and helping prepare the ground for future growth was more than just physical work—it was a powerful reminder of how small actions can create lasting ripple effects. What began as a simple desire to support my friend Melvin turned into a moment of joy, connection, and hope in a world full of uncertainty. This experience reminded me of the beauty in community, purpose, and action. I'm grateful for the people I met and the opportunity to be part of something so meaningful. I look forward to seeing W.T.P.O.F. continue to grow and uplift others.
